Cultiver la Courgette sur un toit

Introduction

Zucchini, also known as courgette, is a popular and easy to grow vegetable which can produce a large yield in a short time. It's a versatile ingredient that can be baked, grilled, or used in soups and casseroles.

Conditions de Croissance

Zucchini plants require full sun and fertile, well-drained soil which is rich in organic matter. They thrive in temperatures above 65°F / 18°C.

Plantation

You can grow zucchini from seeds or young plants. If starting from seed, wait until the soil temperature reaches 65-70°F / 18-21°C and then plant them directly outdoors, approximately 3-4 inches apart and 1 inch deep. Zucchini seeds should germinate within 7-10 days. For established plants, ensure the root ball of the plant sits at the same level as the surrounding soil and firm the soil around it.

The best time to plant zucchini is in the spring, after the last frost and when the danger of frost has passed, depending on your location. In temperate areas, this is usually around May.

Soins

Ensure the zucchini plant is consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells. Water the base of the plant deeply and avoid getting the leaves wet to prevent the spread of disease. Aim for 1-2 inches of water per week. Add a layer of mulch around the plant to help retain moisture.

Feed the plant a month after planting with a balanced fertiliser, diluted to 50% strength, and repeat every 2-4 weeks.

Protection hivernale

Zucchini is a warm-weather crop and cannot tolerate frost. If frost is expected, cover the plant with straw, plastic, newspapers or old sheets to trap the heat. Remove the covering in the morning. Established plants can be protected by bringing them inside or moving them to a sheltered area.

Récolte et stockage

Zucchini should be harvested frequently when the fruits are small and tender, ideally around 6-8 inches long. Use a sharp knife to cut the zucchini from the plant, leaving at least 1 inch of the stem attached to the fruit. Harvested zucchini can be stored in the fridge for up to 10 days or frozen for later use.

Conclusion

With the right care, zucchini plants can provide a bountiful harvest of tasty and nutritious vegetables throughout the summer.
