Cultiver la Figue à Le Mans (Sarthe)

Here is a cultivation guide for growing figs in the Mans region.

Conditions of Growth

Fig trees prefer sunny locations and well-drained soil. They thrive in warm, dry climates but can also be grown in other regions with certain precautions. In colder areas, fig trees can be planted near a south-facing wall for added protection against the cold. The fig tree is reasonably robust and can survive temperatures as low as -10°C to -15°C.

Planting

The best time to plant fig trees is in spring, after the last frost, or in autumn. Choose a sunny spot in your garden and prepare the soil by mixing in some sand or gravel to improve drainage. Fig trees should be planted around 4 metres apart. Add some well-decomposed compost and rocks to the bottom of the hole, then place the tree in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil. Fill the hole with topsoil and gently compact the earth around the plant. Give the tree a good water after planting.

Care

Fig trees don't require a lot of maintenance. Remember to water them regularly, especially during hot, dry periods. Ensure the soil remains slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Fertilise your fig tree in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser designed for citrus fruits, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Prune your fig tree to remove dead, sick or damaged branches, and to encourage healthy growth and a pleasing shape. Pruning also helps to increase productivity. The best time for pruning is at the beginning of spring as the sap starts to rise.

Winter Protection

To protect the roots, apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree during the winter. If frosts are expected, wrap the tree in a thick cloth or use special plant covers.

Harvesting and Storage

Figs are ready to harvest when they are a rich colour and feel soft to the touch. Use clean secateurs to pick the figs from the tree. Fresh figs can be stored at room temperature for about a week, or in the refrigerator for two to three weeks.

Conclusion

Although the Mans region may not have the Mediterranean climate associated with fig tree cultivation, it is possible to successfully grow them there with the right care and precautions against cold weather. With a little effort and attention, you too can enjoy the delicious figs from your own garden.
